Het internet is stuk, maar we kunnen het repareren. Marleen Stikker publiceerde een boek met deze titel iets meer dan een jaar geleden. Het bouwt voort op andere analyses van wat er allemaal misgegaan is met het internet, maar heeft een positieve toon: wat door mensenhanden is gebouwd kunnen we namelijk ook herbouwen en naar onze hand zetten.
Er is veel voor nodig om dat te laten slagen. Bij Waag werken we dagelijks aan projecten waarin we deze toekomst in kleine stapjes concreet maken en waarin het internet tot stand komt dat we wel willen. We hebben het model van de Public Stack ontwikkeld om te inventariseren wat er allemaal komt kijken bij dit ambitieuze project. Zo onderscheiden we vier aspecten van een nieuw fundament waarop dit internet als een digitaal equivalent van onze fysieke publieke ruimte gecreeerd kan worden.
Begin november lanceerden we als Bits of Freedom onze nieuwe privacytoolbox: fixjeprivacy.nl. Op de website vinden bezoekers tips en tools om hun eigen online veiligheid te verbeteren. Zo vind je er tips over hoe je een sterk wachtwoord formuleert, wat de veiligste tool is om te videobellen en hoe je je privacyinstellingen op verschillende sociale media kunt aanpassen.
In een wereld waarin digitale media zich sneller ontwikkelen dan soms bij te houden is, is het belangrijk dat er initiatieven bestaan die actie ondernemen om deze ontwikkelingen in goede banen te leiden. PublicSpaces is zo’n organisatie die zich hard maakt voor een veilige, inclusieve en eerlijke digitale omgeving. Er wordt vaak geroepen dat kinderen de toekomst zijn, en niets is minder waar. Het is daarom juist van belang dat deze groep expliciet wordt beschermd in hun (groeiende) online participatie. Door kinderen niet te beschermen tegen de digitale wereld, maar te beschermen in deze digitale wereld krijgen zij de tools om zich verder te ontwikkelen op digitaal gebied.
We krijgen vaak de vraag, wat ís PublicSpaces nou eigenlijk? Wat willen jullie precies? En hoe ga je je doelen bereiken?
Veel van die informatie is op deze website terug te vinden, maar, toegegeven, nogal verspreid. Een van de doelen die we ons hebben gesteld is om in de komende maanden de site stevig onderhanden te nemen.
